Middlesex County resident James Hanson, age 35, of Middletown, was arrested by warrant on Tuesday, April 2.

Hanson is alleged to have had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a minor student, said Chief Erik Costa of the Middletown Police.

He taught at Middletown High from August 2022 through November 16, 2023, but was immediately placed on administrative leave when the investigation started, Costa said.

Hanson turned himself in at Middletown Police Headquarters where he was charged with:

  • Five counts of sexual assault
  • Two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault
  • Use of a computer to entice a minor
  • Risk of injury to a minor

His arrest is the result of a lengthy investigation conducted by the Middletown Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit and the Homeland Security Investigations Task Force, Costa said.

Hanson was held on a $100,000 cash/surety bond and will be presented in court on Tuesday.
